Welcome to Word Games at Camelot! This exciting program uniquely combines
the magic of video games with rich vocabulary-building material. The result
is a fun product that is going to benefit everyone in your family aged
eight through adult. As you build a superior vocabulary, you will improve
your reading comprehension, speaking and writing skills, confidence, and
self-image. This translates to academic success and improved test scores
for the student in your family, and career advancement opportunities for
the working professional.

Engaging and Fun Learning Environment

Nonstop action, colorful graphics, fluid animation, captivating sound
effects and music, and an enchanting story keep students of all ages
engaged and motivated in their learning quest. To advance in the game and
get to next level, the student must demonstrate a mastery of the word list
they are learning. This seamless integration of fun and educational
material is key to successful educational software.
Extensive Material for Every Age and Level

With more than 3300 words organized by difficulty level (the shareware
evaluation copy has about a third of that), there is something for everyone
in the family: From the young learner who is building reading skills, to
the student who is preparing for college entrance exams, to the working

The Word List Editor
--------------------
Use the included word list editor to customize the program by adding your
child's weekly word list, a list of technical or specialized terms, or even
words in a foreign language.
Record Keeping
--------------
Use the record keeping feature to automatically save performance records
that track the students' progress. You can view these records on-screen or
print them out.
Generation of Printed Materials
-------------------------------
The fun doesn't have to stop when you turn off the computer: You can print
crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, flash cards, and tests for
traditional pen and paper learning activities. You can even print materials
from your own word lists that you created with the word list editor.

Getting Started
===============
System Requirements
-------------------
The minimum requirements to run the program are:
* 286/16MHz IBM PC or 100% compatible.
* MS-DOS 3.1
* 512KB free conventional RAM (640KB total system RAM).
* VGA graphics card and display.
* A 3.5" High Density floppy disk drive and a hard disk
with 1MB of free space.
The following is supported but not required:
* A Sound Blaster or 100% compatible sound card.
* A printer.
* Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
To create an icon for the program in Windows 3.1:
-------------------------------------------------
1. Click the program group where you want the icon to belong.
2. Click on File and choose New...
3. Select Program Item and choose OK.
4. Fill out the dialog box as follows:
Description: Word Games at Camelot
Command Line: WGC.PIF
Working Directory: C:\WGC (If you installed the program to a different
drive and/or directory, substitute the correct drive and/or directory in
the above).
5. Click OK.
6. An icon for the program is created in the selected program group. You
can double click that icon to start the program.
To start the program from Windows:

If you haven't created an icon for the program, you can use the following
procedure to start the program from Windows:
1. If you are running Windows 95 click on Start. If you are running
Windows 3.1 click on File.
2. Click on Run
3. Type C:\WGC\WGC.PIF and press ENTER. (If you installed the program to a
different drive and/or directory, substitute the correct drive and/or
directory in the above.)

To start the program from DOS:
------------------------------
1. Change your current directory to the program directory:
Type CD \WGC at the DOS prompt and press ENTER. (If you installed the
program to a different directory, substitute the correct directory in
the above.)
2. Type WGC and press ENTER.
Signing In
----------
Before you start the game you need to sign in. The New Player menu lists
all players who had signed in before. If you played the game before, your
name is on the list and you can choose it. Use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to
select your name, then press ENTER
If this is your first game, you need to enter your name. Use UP ARROW or
DOWN ARROW to select Add a Player, and press ENTER. A text entry box
appears, type your name and press ENTER. The program then displays the
story of the game. Continue to press any key to advance in the story.
The Story
=========
This is the time of King Arthur. A magical time when courageous knights
roamed the land in search of fantastic adventures, defending the weak, and
righting the wrong. Buried treasures, awesome fortunes, and great honors
awaited brave knights who dared to prove their worth.
King Arthur was the fairest and bravest of all kings. He built a
magnificent castle at Camelot. From there he ruled his vast kingdom.
Justice and happiness prevailed.
King Arthur gathered his loyal knights at Camelot. From there they rode
forth to defend the kingdom, slay dragons, and embark on fantastic
adventures. The knights sat at the Round Table, a table that had no special
seat of honor. This meant the knights were all equal and at peace with each
other.
King Arthur needed one more knight to join the Round Table. He turned to
Merlin the enchanter for help. Merlin was the most skilled wizard who ever
lived, and the king's most trusted advisor.
Merlin suggested they organize a contest for the best knights in the
kingdom. Each contestant must brave many dangers, overcome fierce
opponents, and gather hidden treasures. The successful knight would also
have to demonstrate a mastery of words and their meanings. Because, at
times, words can be mightier than the sword.
The king liked the idea. He sent out messengers to the four corners of the
kingdom to announce the contest. The news traveled fast across the land.
Many excellent knights came to Camelot to take on the challenge but none
could complete it.
Now, it is your turn!

Using the Menus
===============
Options and commands in the program are organized within menus. A flashing
cursor to the left of menu indicates what item is currently selected. Use
the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to move the cursor to the item you want to
select. Selecting alone does not initiate an action. You must choose an
item by pressing ENTER when that item is selected to carry out an action.
Some menu items are commands that initiate an action (e.g., Start Game),
others are options that you can set to different values (e.g., Music
On/Off), while others activate a different menu (e.g., Game Options).
Another important key is the ESC key. It is the key at the top left corner
of most keyboards. This key allows you to 'Escape' or cancel the current
activity.
The Help Panel
--------------
An important source of help information is the help panel at the bottom of
your screen. It displays context-sensitive help information. Help messages
typically describe the currently selected menu item, or the available
keyboard commands.
The Status Panel
----------------
If there is no help available for the currently selected item, the help
panel turns into a status panel. The status panel displays the current
player's name, the selected word list, the type of word problems to ask,
whether record keeping is on, and the percentage of correct answers
required to pass a level.

Playing the Game
================
Choose Instructions from the Main menu for useful and illustrated help
screens on how to play the game. You can also access those instructions
anytime while playing the game by pressing F1.
Activating the game demo is also a good way to learn about the different
game elements and play.
Your objective in each level is to answer the guards' questions (the
vocabulary drill), achieve enough correct answers, and find the exit sign
to advance to the next level.
The Score Panel
---------------
The score panel is displayed at the bottom of the screen while you are
playing a game. It displays the score, the health meter, and the game level
number. It also displays how many problems you got correctly, how many
incorrectly, and the number of problems you need answered correctly to pass
(labeled Goal).
Game Control Keys
-----------------
The following keys allow you to control the game play. (The program does
not support a joystick or a mouse.)
* Press LEFT ARROW to move left, RIGHT ARROW to move right, and SHIFT to
jump.
* Press UP ARROW to look up, climb up, operate a switch, or enter through a
door.
* Press DOWN ARROW to look down, climb down, or operate a switch.
* Press ESC to bring up the Game Options menu where you can set the game's
difficulty level, speed, and sound options. You can also use this key to
pause the game, and when you are ready to continue, choose Resume Game.
For more information about the Game Options menu, see "The Game Options
Menu" later in the manual.
* Press F1 to display the game playing instructions.

Game Elements
-------------
* Foes, Food, and Health
Along the way you must avoid different opponents or they will cause you to
lose health points. Eating the food you find replenishes your health. The
health meter on the scoreboard displays how many health units you have
left. If you run out of health units, you will have to restart the level
from the beginning. You will lose all health if you fall into a pool of
water or a pit of spikes (ouch!).
If you encounter a flagpole, raise your flag and you will restart there if
you lose all health instead of restarting from the beginning of the level.
Note: Some opponents have a weakness and you can use your own weight to get
rid of them! Also, some levels contain an invincibility shield that
protects you from all opponents for a limited amount of time.
* Goods and Scoring
The levels are full of goods (shields, swords, daggers, and other knight's
accessories and necessities), collect them for points. Each level also
contains treasures hidden in secret areas.
* Teleports, Switches, and Doors
Some levels contain teleports you can use to enter hidden areas. To use a
teleport, simply run into it. Other levels contain switches you can operate
to open doors, or to make walls or floors appear or disappear. To operate a
switch, stand in front of it and press UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW. On some
levels there are doors that take you inside rooms or huts. To enter through
a door, stand in front of it and press UP ARROW.
End of Game Options
-------------------
If you did not achieve enough correct answers to pass, you get one (and
only one) more opportunity to retake the missed words in a quiz format and
achieve your goal. It is a good idea to first choose the Review Missed
Words command before you attempt the make up quiz. Only when you achieve a
passing grade can you advance to the next game level.
If you achieved your goal of correct answers, you receive bonus points for
the percentage of words you got correctly, and for the percentage of
treasures and hidden treasures that you collected in the game. You get an
extra bonus if you got 100% of the words correctly or if you collected 100%
of the treasures. If the word list you used was one that you previously
completed successfully, no bonus points are awarded.
The program then presents you with the Vocabulary Options menu. If you have
successfully mastered the word list, now is a good time to choose a new
word list. The program keeps track of which word lists you have
successfully completed and will not award you the end of game bonus points
if you use a word list you had completed before.
From the Vocabulary Options menu, you can display the selected word list
using the Show List command, and study it using the Study List command.
When you feel confident that you learned your word list, choose Start Game
to continue your adventure. For more information about the Vocabulary
Options menu, see "The Vocabulary Options Menu" later in the manual.

The Main Menu
=============
The Main menu is the first menu you see when you start the program.
The following describes the items available in the Main menu.
* Start Game:
Start a game. The game starts at the level the player was at last.
* Game Options:
Activate the Game Options menu. From that menu you can set the options that
affect game play such as the game's difficulty level and speed, sound
effects, and music. For more information, see "The Game Options Menu" later
in the manual.
* Vocabulary Options:
Activate the Vocabulary Options menu. From that menu you can select a word
list, select the type of problems to ask, display the words in the selected
word list, study it, or take a quiz. For more information, see "The
Vocabulary Options Menu" later in the manual.
* Teacher's Options:
Activate the Teacher's Options menu. From that menu you can select the
percentage required to pass a level, turn record keeping on or off, view
the students' records, generate printed materials, or use the word list
editor. For more information, see "The Teacher's Options Menu" later in the
manual.
* New Player:
Select a different player or to add a new one. For more information, see
"The New Player Menu" later in the manual.
* High Scores:
Display the game's high scores list.
* Story:
Display the story of the game.
* Instructions:
Display the game's playing instructions. You can access those same
instructions while playing the game by pressing F1.
* Demo:
Start a self-running demo of the game in action. It is a great way to learn
about the game play. The demo also starts automatically after a delay if
you don't touch the keyboard while in the Main menu.
* Quit:
Quit the program. You can also press ESC to activate this command. You will
be prompted to confirm your choice.

The Vocabulary Options Menu
===========================
The Vocabulary Options menu is activated from the Main menu. It is also
automatically activated after you complete a game level. From this menu you
can set options related to the educational material, such as which word
list to use and the type of problems to ask. You can also display the
selected word list, study it, and start a quiz or a game.
The following describes the items available in the Vocabulary Options menu.
* Start Game:
Start a game. It is identical to the Start Game command in the Main menu.
It is repeated here only for convenience.
* Start Quiz:
Start a quiz. A quiz simply drills you in the word list and does not
contain a game element.
* Study List:
Study the currently selected word list. The program displays a sentence
containing the word you are learning, and gives you an opportunity to think
of its meaning. When you press a key, the definition of the word is
displayed. It is a good idea to study the word list before you start a game
or quiz.
* Show List:
Display all the words in the selected word list on-screen. Useful for
verifying the difficulty level of the word list and in determining if you
need to study the list.
* Level:
Select the difficulty level of the word list. Settings include Beginning,
Intermediate, Advanced, SAT/ College, Challenge and Custom. Choose the
Custom setting to load a word list that you created with the word list
editor.
Note: SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, a standardized test given to
students seeking admission to college in the U.S. The words in this level
have appeared in previous tests and are helpful in SAT preparation.
* Category:
Select the category of the word list. Settings include Adjectives, Nouns,
and Verbs. (Only Adjectives are available in the shareware evaluation
copy.)
* List No.:
Select a particular word list from the ones available for the selected
level and category. The word lists that you have successfully completed
(either in a game or a quiz) are displayed in red. If you choose a list you
have completed before and start a game, you will not be awarded end of game
bonus points.
* Datafile:
Load a word list that you created with the word list editor. The custom
word list is then loaded and made ready for use with all program
activities. (This option is present only if you selected the Custom setting
for the Level option.)

* Pick Word:
Enable the type of problem where you are presented with a definition and
you have to pick a word that matches that definition from a list of words.
* Pick Definition:
Enable the type of problem where you are presented with a word and you have
to pick a definition that matches that word from a list of definitions.
* Complete Sentence:
Enable the type of problem where you are presented with a sentence missing
a word, and you have to pick a word that completes that sentence from a
list of words.
Note: The three options above specify the types of problems that appear in
the game or quiz. If more than one type is selected then the type of
problem alternates between the selected types. At least one of these three
options must be turned on.

The Game Options Menu
=====================
The Game Options menu is activated from the Main menu. It is also
accessible at any time during game play when you press ESC. From this menu
you can set options related to the game play, such as the game's difficulty
level and speed, sound effects, and music.
The following describes the items available in the Game Options menu.
* Resume Game:
Resume game play. (This option is present only when you are playing a
game.)
* Stop Game:
Stop the game play and go back to the Main menu. Any progress made in the
current game level is lost. (This option is present only when you are
playing a game.)
* Difficulty:
Set the difficulty level of the game play. The more difficult the level,
the smarter your foes are and the faster they move. There are three
settings to choose from: Easy, Average (default), or Hard.
* Speed:
Set the speed of the game play. There are two settings to choose from:
Regular (default), or Slow. The Slow setting has the effect of running the
game in "slow motion." Choose the Slow setting for the less experienced or
younger player who feels that the game plays too fast.
* Sound:
Select the sound effects device. There are three settings to choose from:
-Off: Turns off the sound effects.
-PC Speaker: Plays sound effects through the computer's built-in speaker.
The PC speaker can only play rudimentary sound effects.
-Sound Card: Plays digitized sound effects through your sound card's
speakers. This setting is available only if the program detects a Sound
Blaster or compatible card.
See Appendix A, "Troubleshooting," if you have a sound card and the Sound
Card setting does not appear as a selection or if you have a problem with
the sound generation.
* Music:
Turn the music on or off. This option is available only if the program
detects a Sound Blaster or compatible sound card. When turned on, it plays
a music track through your sound card's speakers.
See Appendix A, "Troubleshooting," if you have a sound card and the Music
option does not appear or if you have a problem with the music generation.

The Teacher's Options Menu
==========================
The Teacher's menu is activated from the Main menu. From this menu you can
select the percentage of correct answers required to pass a level, turn
record keeping on or off, view the students' records, generate printed
materials, or start the word list editor.
The following describes the items available in the Teacher's menu.
* Required Percentage:
Select the percentage of correct answers required to pass a quiz or game
level. The available settings are: 70%, 80% (default), 90%, and 100%.
Note: This option is global, meaning that it applies to all students, not
just to the student who signed in last.
* Record Keeping:
Turn the record keeping feature on or off. When turned on, a student's
performance record is automatically saved after each quiz or game level.
For more information, see the section "Using Record Keeping" later in the
manual.

* View Records:
Display the students' performance records that were saved by the record
keeping system. You also get the option to print or delete them. For more
information, see the section "Using Record Keeping" later in the manual.
* Printed Materials:
Print the currently selected word list as a list, a test, flash cards, a
word search puzzle, or a crossword puzzle. See the section "Printing
Options" below, for more information related to selecting the print device.
* Word List Editor:
Start the word list editor. Use it to create your own custom word lists.
For more information, see the section "Using the Word List Editor" later in
the manual.

Printing Options
================
When you print from the program, you can choose to print directly to a
printer attached to the computer's first parallel port. Your other option
is to print to a Disk File. When you choose the latter option, you will be
prompted for a filename. You may enter a drive specifier, and/or a
directory where you want the file to be located. The output that normally
goes to the printer will go into a text file by the name you supplied.
The Disk File option is useful when you don't have a printer ready and
attached to your computer's first parallel port. You can print the output
file later, or on a different computer if necessary. To print the file from
DOS, you can use the DOS Print command. From Windows 3.1, you can use the
File Manager's Print... command in the File menu. Please consult your
operating system manual for detailed information about printing files.
You can also load the output file into an editor or word processor for
further formatting and modification before printing.
Note: If you import the output file into a Windows application for editing
and printing, you should select the whole text (highlight it) and set the
font to a monospaced font. Not doing so will cause the horizontal spacing
of the text to become uneven and the text will appear crooked. With
monospaced (fixed-width) fonts, all characters have the same width (e.g., a
narrow character such as an 'i' would take up the same space as a wide
character such as a 'w'). An example of such a font is Courier New.
Using Record Keeping
====================
When the record keeping feature is turned on, the program saves the
students' performance in records that can be later viewed on-screen or
printed.
Turn this feature on from the Teacher's Options menu. When a student
finishes a game level or a quiz, a record of the student's performance is
automatically added to the record keeping file. This record contains the
student's name, the word list attempted, the percentage of correct answers,
the percentage required for success, and whether the level was successfully
completed.
Viewing, Printing, and Deleting Records
---------------------------------------
To view the saved records, choose View Records from the Teacher's menu. The
records are displayed on the screen and you can press P to print them out.
For more information related to selecting the print device, see the section
"Printing Options," in the chapter "The Teacher's Options," earlier in the
manual.
The program saves the students' records in a file named WGC.REC that it
maintains in the program's directory. New records continue to be added at
the end of that file. If the record file gets too long with old records,
you can delete it by pressing DEL while in the View Records screen. This
deletes the entire file; so use with caution! The next time a record is
saved after you have deleted the record keeping file, a new one is created.

Using the Word List Editor
==========================
Use the word list editor to customize the program by creating your own word
lists. Use it to add your child's weekly word list, a list of specialized
terms, or even a list of words in a foreign language.
To start the editor, choose Word List Editor from the Teacher's menu. A
custom word list can contain up to thirty (30) words. A minimum of ten (10)
words is required for the custom list to be usable with the game.
Each word entry in a custom word list consists of a word, its definition,
and a sentence where that word is used. When entering the sentence, type an
asterisk (*) in the position where the word should appear.
The Word List Editor Menu
-------------------------
Press ESC to activate the word list editor's menu.
The following describes the items available in the editor's menu.
* Edit:
Go back to the editor's screen.
* Save List:
Save the word list you are working on to a file. Enter a filename up to
eight characters long and no drive, path, or extension. The program
automatically appends a .DAT extension to the filename. The file is always
saved in the program's directory.
* Load List:
Load a previously saved word list. You must first save any work in
progress, otherwise it will be lost when the word list is loaded. A list
box containing the filenames of the custom word lists appears. Choose the
file you want to load.
* Clear List:
Clear the list you are currently editing. Use with caution; a cleared list
cannot be recovered.
* Show Words:
Show all the words in the list.
* Sort List:
Sort the word list by the alphabetical order of the words. This operation
is not reversible.
* Insert Entry:
Insert a blank entry at the current location in the word list.
* Delete Entry:
Delete the word entry the cursor is on. Use with caution; deleted entries
cannot be recovered.

Loading and Using a Custom Word List
------------------------------------
Custom word lists you create in the word list editor can be loaded and used
in the program. Once loaded, a custom word list can be used in all program
activities: the game, the quiz, and in generating printed materials.
To load a custom word list:
1. From the Main menu, choose Vocabulary Options.
2. For the Level option, choose Custom.
3. Choose the Datafile option.
4. A list box containing the filenames of the custom word lists appears.
Choose the file you want to load.
5. The custom word list is read in and can be used in all program
activities.
The New Player Menu
===================
The New Player menu lists all players who had signed in before. Choose your
name from that list to continue the game at the point you left off, with
the different options the way they were set the last time you played the
game.
If you need to add a new player, choose Add a Player. A text entry box
appears and you can enter the new player's name. If the New Player list is
full, the selection Add a Player will not show. You need to delete a player
to create room for a new one. Select the player you want to delete and
press DEL. This deletes that player's information and creates a space for a
new one. Now the selection Add a Player appears and you can choose it to
add a new player.
The program keeps track of each player using their sign-in name. The
information kept for each player includes their score, the game level they
are at, the settings of the different options in the Game and Vocabulary
menus, and what word lists they have successfully completed. The above
information, together with the high scores list, are automatically
maintained in a configuration file named WGC.CFG that exists in the
program's directory.
Note: The settings for the Required Percentage and the Record Keeping
options (from the Teacher's menu) are not saved individually for each
player. Rather, they are global options that are saved only once and apply
to all players from the moment they are set or changed.

Appendix A: Troubleshooting and Customer Support
================================================
* Problem: I can't get sound and/or music from my sound card.
Make sure your speakers are connected correctly to your sound card and
turned on. Make sure that the Sound option under the Game menu is set to
Sound Card. Also, check that the Music option under the Game menu is set to
On. If the program can't detect a Sound Blaster or compatible card, the
Sound option will not list Sound Card as a selection, and the Music option
will be hidden.
The program supports only Sound Blaster and 100% compatible cards. If
your card is not a Sound Blaster made by Creative Labs, Inc., please refer
to your sound card manual for information on how to set it up in a Sound
Blaster compatible mode. Some sound cards require you to load a device
driver at boot time to set it up in a Sound Blaster mode. If your card
cannot be configured as a Sound Blaster compatible card, it will not work
with the program.
Technical note: Your sound card's DMA channel should be set to 1, the IRQ
number can be 2,3,5,7, or 10. Other settings are not supported.
* Problem: I can't get sound and/or music from my sound card when running
from Windows 95:
Make sure you have a sound device installed under Windows 95. Check the
System Control Panel, or Multimedia Control Panel for your sound card. If
there's no Multimedia Control Panel, Windows 95 doesn't know you have a
sound card. We also recommend that you close all open applications before
you start the program.
* Problem: I can't get sound and/or music from my sound card when running
from Windows 3.1:
We recommend that you close all open applications before you start the
program. If that doesn't help, exit Windows 3.1 completely (by choosing the
Exit command from the Program Manager's File menu-NOT by double-clicking on
the DOS icon). Any sound problems must be solved in DOS first before you
attempt running this program from Windows 3.1.
You should be able to successfully run the DOS test and diagnostic
software that came with your sound card and verify that it can generate
sound and music. After you verify that your sound card is working correctly
under DOS in a Sound Blaster compatible mode, start the program. Make sure
that the Sound option under the Game menu is set to Sound Card. Also, check
that the Music option under the Game menu is set to On.
When you are successful in getting the sound working when running the
program from DOS, you can try to run the program from Windows 3.1 if you
want to. If you still have a problem with the sound only when running from
Windows 3.1, consult the solution to the following problem.

* Problem: I am running the program from Windows (3.1 or 95) and it is
running erratically or I am encountering errors or lock-ups.
Always use the PIF (WGC.PIF) to start the program, as opposed to using
the executable (WGC.EXE). We also recommend you close all other
applications before you start the program.
Since the program is a DOS application, compatibility with all the
different Windows configurations is not guaranteed. The solution may lie in
quitting Windows completely to DOS. To quit Windows 3.1, choose the Exit
command from the Program Manager's File menu (don't double-click the DOS
icon). To quit Windows 95, click the Start button and choose Shut Down,
then choose "Restart the computer in DOS mode." Now start the program from
DOS. For instructions on how to start the program from DOS, see the section
"To start the program from DOS," in the chapter "Getting Started" earlier
in the manual. If the above solves the problem, always quit Windows and
start the program from DOS. When you are done, you can reload Windows by
typing WIN at the DOS prompt.
* Problem: The program gives an error message on start up or fails to
start.
The program checks if you have the necessary system requirements before
it tries to run. For information about the program's system requirements,
see the section "System Requirements," in the chapter "Getting Started."
If you start the program from DOS or from Windows 3.1 and it tells you
there is not enough memory, chances are too much of your computer's memory
is being used up by device drivers and TSRs (Terminate and Stay Resident
utilities). Get rid of unnecessary drivers and TSRs by typing REM in front
of the lines that load them in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS system
files, then reboot your computer and try running the program again. You can
also use the DOS utility MemMaker to make more memory available for
applications. Consult your DOS documentation for information about the
MemMaker utility.
* Problem: I have read this troubleshooting section, and the other relevant
sections of the manual, but I still can't solve a problem with the program.
